Personal, Social, Health, Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education
Our intent for our PHSE approach that children need to feel safe and happy in order to learn and achieve their potential. Our PSHE and RSE curriculums are designed specifically for our children, considering our context and Christian distinctiveness. It aims to embed safe practices as well as happiness, self-confidence and self-esteem. Fundamental British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Tolerance, Mutual Respect and Individual Liberty are explored through our approach and are also embedded across all aspects of school life, including Collective Worship, the creative curriculum and our ethos and core values
Our intent is our children:
- Prepare for life in modern Britain and the wider-world.
- Develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationships, within a range of social/cultural contexts.
- Identify and effectively manage different influences on health and well-being.
- Achieve their potential.
- Experience high quality teaching and learning at all times.
- Are inspired by our teaching.
We implement our PSHE and RSE curriculum through:
- Utilising high quality resources like 'Heartsmart' and 'The Christopher Winter Project,' where prior learning is revisited, reinforced and extended in age- and stage-appropriate contexts through engaging and inspiring stimuli.
- Sexual health is taught as an element of health education but also within the context of healthy relationships (See our RSE policy, in line with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance).
The impact of our PHSE education is that children:
- Are open, sensitive and reflective individuals who respond and manage issues in their own lives.
- Have a deep moral understanding of the impact of their actions on others.
- Use their debate skills across the curriculum, demonstrating respect and sensitivity.
- Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.
- Prepare children for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene.
- Help children develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy.
The impact of our RSE education is that children:
- Thrive in a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships.
- Learn the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies.
- Are provided with a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.
- Are prepared for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene.
