Modern Foreign Languages

At Sledmere and Wetwang Federation our intent is that learning a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) develops a thirst for learning languages and provides an opening to other cultures. Our chosen langauge to learn is French.

Our intent is that all children:

  • Achieve their potential.
  • Experience high quality teaching and learning at all times.
  • Can express their ideas and thoughts in another language.
  • Understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.
  • Have opportunities for to communicate for practical purposes.
  • Understand and appreciate how exploring another language will help to lay the foundations for further language learning in the future.

We implement our MFL curriculum through:

  • A curriculum designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language.
  • High quality modelling and scaffolding of spoken and written French skills in order for all children to achieve excellence.
  • Nurture and relationships allow adults to support children to experiment and challenge themselves.
  • Learning journeys that reflect what is being taught.
  • Learning that is high quality, showing a range of learning and evidence the highest expectations.
  • Learning across the curriculum is sequentially planned to build on knowledge and skill.
  • Support to encourage and develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing and games. As their confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.
  • Using a range of high quality resources.

The impact of our French approach is children who are eager and equipped to learn other languages and who enjoy learning about other cultures.
