Geography

At Sledmere and Wetwang Federation our intent for Geography is to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Our intent is that all children:

  • Achieve their potential.

  • Experience high quality teaching and learning at all times.

  • Be equipped with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep .understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

  • Understand compare and contrast different places, people and localities throughout the world.

  • Apply geographical skills in every day life.

We implement our Geography curriculum through:

  • In EYFS, we implement Geography through exploring the world around us, as well as learning about people in the world, making links with children from other backgrounds and cultures.  We remember our learning through vocabulary floor books. We follow children’s interest but promote further challenge through adult interactions and by providing books to learn about Geography.

  • We explore a wide range of artist's work, supporting children to consider whether they like it or not.

  • Our curriculum sequence of Assess, Teach and Re-assess.

  • Visits and experiences focusing geographical knowledge and skills.

  • High quality modelling and scaffolding of Geography skills in order for all children to achieve excellence.

  • Nurture and relationships allow adults to support children to experiment and challenge themselves.

  • Learning journeys that reflect what is being taught.

  • Learning that is high quality, showing a range of Geography and evidence the highest expectations.

  • Learning across the curriculum is sequentially planned to build on knowledge and skills.

  • Opportunities to learn outdoors, undertaking fieldwork and using geographical equipment.

  • Use of a range of high quality resources and media.

The impact of our Geography approach is our children are equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the next key stage and for their future life as an adult in the wider world.
